Pizzo Carbonara - Hiking in Sicily
Pizzo Carbonara is the highest peak of the Madonie Park and the second of Sicily after the epic Mount Etna.
Starting from Battaglietta, we will follow the path that climbs through the valley of Zottafonda and continues northwest, crossing small beech woods beneath Pizzo della Principessa peak.
Along the way you can admire the sinkholes (characteristic karst forms) that characterize this massif.
The trail ends at Pizzo Carbonara (1979 m) from where you can observe the peaks of the whole mountain range as well as most of Sicily and the Aeolian Islands that you can see on the north on clear days. The massif of Carbonara offers an opportunity to study obvious signs of karst features and a significant amount of fossils.
From Pizzo Carbonara our steps lead to Pizzo Scalonazzo back down towards the south-east to the Battaglietta.
The tour will be guided by the AIGAE guide (The Italian Association for Professional Nature and Walking Guides).
