Lisbon Private City Tour 9H We shall visit Lisbon’s historic centre, including the See Cathedral, a wonderful example of roman-gothic mediaeval religious architecture, built for the very first Bishop of Lisbon right after the retaking of the city from the Moors, in 1147; the Castle of St. George, a proud fortress with a breath taking view over Lisbon, occupied by several peoples until finally taken by D. Afonso Henriques, who was crowned the first King of Portugal also in 1147. In Belém, we shall visit the Museum of Carriages, founded in 1905 by D. Amélia, wife to our King D. Luís, in which we may find a wide variety of carriages and sieges dating from different periods throughout three whole centuries; the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, a monument to the Portuguese seafaring adventure, inaugurated in 1960 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Infante D. Henrique; the Monastery of Hieronymites, which began being built in the early 1502s under D. Manuel I and stands today as one of the most magnificent examples of the Manuelin style, as well as the Tower of Belém. Both these two monuments are UNESCO’s world cultural heritage sites, and are also two of the Seven Wonders of Portugal since July 2007.
